Answer:
Hi, this is Jerica from InSinkErator® Customer Service. Kindly check the power cord if there is a smooth side and ribbed side. The smooth side of the power cord should be connected to the black wire of the disposer while the ribbed side of the power cord should be connected to the white wire of the disposer. The power cord should also be properly grounded to the ground screw of the disposer. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us through [email protected] or call InSinkErator AnswerLine at 1 (800) 558-5700. Thank you.

Can a 16 ga. stranded wire be used to connect the disposal direct to a switch?

I have 12 ga. solid wire from 20 amp breaker to switch. 20 amp requires 12 ga. by code. But power cord kit is only 16 ga. I realize it would plug into receptacle normally but I would like to wire it directly into my switch box. Will this violate code? I am mounting the switch on the front of the cabinet in front of the sink. I would prefer to connect the stranded wires instead of 12 ga. solid wires. It has been suggested that the disposal be plugged into a GFCI. Do you recommend that?

Answer:
Hi, this is Jerica from InSinkErator Customer Service. We are not able to comment on whether something meets code or not because they vary so much based on the local authority; it is best to check with the local inspector on code questions. As far as a GFCI goes, the disposer will operate fine when properly installed with or without a GFCI in the circuit; however some people like the added peace of mind of having one installed. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us through [email protected] or call InSinkErator AnswerLine at 1 (800) 558-5700. Thank you.

My old insinkerator unit is directly hardwired to the power cable since there is no outlet under the sink; can the septic assist model also be hardwired without a cord?

Answer:
Hi, this is Jerica from InSinkErator Customer Service. Yes, all InSinkErator disposers can either be hardwired or plugged in depending on the electrical connection that our customers have. When purchasing a disposer, please make sure that it has open wires and should not come pre-installed with a power cord as we do not recommend removal of pre-installed power cords. If you have questions, you may call InSinkErator AnswerLine at 1 (800) 558-5700. Thank you.
